Definition and meaning of the railway opening:
To characterize the facing, the values of length and opening are combined. It is possible to obtain a specific length with different openings. Both values are only determined when the model is named. Every player has a different embouchure, for example, due to individual jaw position. The resulting sound with the same reed and mouthpiece can therefore vary considerably. Nevertheless, some general statements can be made. Short facings do not allow for a pronounced vibrato compared to long facings. However, the upper registers are easier to attack with short facings. A narrower facing limits the dynamic range, as the reed's vibrations are reduced.
Narrow and medium-narrow facings with a long facing and harder reeds produce a concentrated tone, characterized by clear intonation and responsiveness, even over large interval leaps. This is important for musicians playing in symphonic music. The more open the facing, the more voluminous the tone, but the breathiness also increases. This smoky sound is particularly desirable for saxophonists and popular in jazz. However, an overly open facing should not be used, as a disadvantage of a longer and more open facing is the increased difficulty in intonation. The blowing resistance increases, and lighter reeds are then preferred.
