Can I repair my accordion myself?
Accordions are very complex instruments that should only be repaired by professional technicians. However, there are simple cleaning and maintenance tasks that players can perform themselves to extend the lifespan of their accordion.
Significant exposure to heat damages the accordion. Direct strong sunlight or proximity to heaters is particularly harmful. Closed car trunks in summer are especially dangerous. Temperatures of 70 degrees Celsius are not uncommon here and can cause considerable damage to the sound-producing elements in your accordion. Hardly any musical instrument tolerates high humidity (fog, rain, damp rooms). Detuning, warping of various wooden parts, and swelling of the bellows are examples of possible damage to the accordion.
A soft, dry, and lint-free cloth is suitable for cleaning the keyboard and casing. Please do not use alcohol!
Place the accordion horizontally on its feet; this protects the structure of the reed blocks.
Pressing several register buttons simultaneously should also be avoided!
Does my accordion need regular maintenance?
With normal, regular use, regular maintenance is not necessary. Nevertheless, it does no harm to have the accordion checked by a specialist at regular intervals.
If the accordion shows problems, it should be checked by a specialist.
Can I tune my accordion myself?
No. For tuning, the instrument should definitely be in the hands of an experienced professional!

My accordion is making valve noises. What's causing it?
The loudness of the valve noise varies from model to model and is not considered bothersome by many players. When a key or button is pressed, the airflow from the bellows is directed to the corresponding reed, causing it to vibrate and produce an audible sound. When the key or button is released, the reed continues to vibrate for a certain period – known as the sustain duration. The air cushion between the reed and the valve transfers this vibration to the valve, causing it to strike against the reed block and rattle. Since the length of the sustain duration depends on the length of the reed, and reeds in lower registers are longer, louder and longer valve noises occur particularly in the lower registers.
Individual playing style also affects the intensity of valve noises: jerky movements of the bellows cause stronger valve noises than gentle, smooth movements.
