For beginners and advanced players alike, precise intonation, smooth mechanics, and easily accessible keys are paramount. Uncomplicated response across all registers is also important. For more expensive models, sound versatility, manufacturing quality, and the manufacturer's reputation also play a crucial role.

Which alto saxophone is right for me?

The choice depends primarily on your own skill level. Beginners will find good value for money in affordable entry-level models. Those who have made initial progress and developed a clear idea of sound can venture into mid-range instruments. Professional saxophones impress with sophisticated mechanics, hand-engraved craftsmanship, and effortless intonation in all registers — it's best to try out different models before making a decision.

The entry-level segment starts at around 500 euros. Which mouthpiece and accessories do I need?

The mouthpiece significantly influences the sound—beginners are well-advised to use a standard model like the Yamaha 4C. Narrower tip openings are suitable for classical music.

Essential accessories also include: a neck strap with padding, reeds of appropriate strength (beginners: strength 1.5–2.5), a pull-through swab for maintenance, a bite pad, cork grease, a sturdy backpack, and a saxophone stand.

At what age can you learn to play the saxophone?

Usually from 8–9 years old for the alto saxophone. Younger children can start with a soprano saxophone or a special child's version. Adults can start at any age – it's never too late to learn the saxophone.

Do I need prior musical experience?

No. You can learn the saxophone without prior experience. Basic knowledge of reading music helps, but is not strictly necessary – many teachers start with ear training and improvisation.

How long does it take until one can play a piece?

The first simple melodies are often possible after 2–4 weeks. After 6–12 months of regular practice, one masters the basics and can play recognizable songs.

How much does a good beginner saxophone cost?

New quality instruments start at around €500-600 for an alto saxophone. At Costa Instruments, you can also find professionally reconditioned used instruments starting from around €590, which often offer a better playing experience than inexpensive new items.

Can I start with the tenor saxophone too?

Generally, yes – but for children, we recommend starting with the alto saxophone. For adults, it's a matter of personal goals and physical conditions.

The most important practical difference: An alto saxophone weighs around 2–3 kg and is therefore much more comfortable to hold than a tenor saxophone, which weighs about 3–4 kg. Especially for beginners, this makes a noticeable difference – both during long practice sessions and when transporting the instrument.
