Definition and meaning of tip opening:

The characteristics of the facing are described by combining the values of its length and opening. It is possible to get a specific length with different openings. Both values are only defined when the model is named. Every player has a different blowing technique, for example, due to individual jaw position. Therefore, the sound result with the same reed and mouthpiece can vary greatly. Nevertheless, a few general statements can be made. Short facings, compared to long facings, do not allow for a pronounced vibrato. However, the upper registers are easier to approach with short facings. A narrower facing limits the dynamic range because the vibrations of the reed are smaller.

Narrow and medium-narrow tip openings with a long facing and harder reeds achieve a concentrated tone, which convinces with clear intonation and response even with large interval leaps. This is important for musicians who play in the symphonic field. The more open the facing becomes, the more voluminous the tone becomes, but the proportion of breath sound also increases. This smoky sound is particularly desired by saxophonists and is also popular in jazz. But the facing should not be too open, because a disadvantage of a longer and more open facing is also the more difficult intonation. The blowing resistance increases, and lighter reeds are then preferred.
