Definition and meaning of the tip opening:

To characterize the facing, the values for length and opening are combined. It is possible to get a specific length with different openings. Both values are only fixed when the model is designated. Every player has a different blowing technique, for example due to individual jaw position. The sound result with the same reed and the same mouthpiece can therefore vary greatly. Nevertheless, a few general statements can be made. Compared to long facings, short facings do not allow for a pronounced vibrato. However, the upper registers are easier to approach with short facings. A narrower tip opening limits the dynamic range because the oscillation movements of the reed are smaller.

Narrow and medium-narrow tip openings with a long facing and harder reeds achieve a concentrated tone, which impresses with clear intonation and response even with large interval jumps. This is important for musicians who play in symphonic settings. The more open the facing becomes, the more voluminous the tone, but the breathy quality also increases. This smoky sound is particularly desired by saxophonists and is also popular in jazz. However, the facing should not be too open, because a disadvantage of a longer and more open facing is that intonation becomes more difficult. The blowing resistance increases, and it is then preferred to play with lighter reeds.
