Definition and meaning of tip opening:

To characterize the lay, the values of its length and opening are combined. It is possible to get a certain length with different openings. Both values are only determined when the model is named. Each player has a different blowing technique, for example due to individual jaw position. The sound result with the same reed and mouthpiece can therefore vary greatly. Nevertheless, a few general statements can be made. Short lays do not allow for a pronounced vibrato compared to long lays. However, the upper registers are easier to articulate with short lays. A narrower lay limits the dynamic range, as the vibrations of the reed are smaller.

Narrow and medium-narrow tip openings with a long lay and harder reeds achieve a concentrated tone that convinces with clear intonation and response even with large interval jumps. This is important for musicians who play in the symphonic field. The more open the lay, the more voluminous the tone becomes, but also the breath noise increases. This smoky sound is particularly desired by saxophonists and popular in jazz. But the lay should not be too open, because a disadvantage of a longer and more open lay is the more difficult intonation. The blowing resistance increases, and lighter reeds are then preferred.
