Definition and meaning of the track opening:
To characterize the face, the values of length and opening are combined. It is possible to get a certain length with different openings. Both values are only determined when the model is named. Every player has a different blowing technique, for example due to individual jaw position. The sound result with the same reed and mouthpiece can therefore vary greatly. Nevertheless, a few general statements can be made. Short faces do not allow for a pronounced vibrato compared to long faces. However, the upper registers in particular are easier to attack with short faces. A narrower face limits the dynamic range because the reed's vibration movements are smaller.
Narrow and medium-narrow openings with a long opening and harder reeds produce a concentrated sound, which impresses with clear intonation and response even with large interval jumps. This is important for musicians who play in the symphonic range. The more open the opening, the more voluminous the sound becomes, but the breathy sound component also increases. This smoky sound is particularly desired by saxophonists and is also popular in jazz. But a too open opening should not be used either, because a longer and more open opening also makes intonation more difficult. The blowing resistance increases and lighter reeds are then preferred.
