Buying Accordion Straps: A Comparison of Leather, PU, Padding & Back Straps
Anyone who plays the accordion knows the problem: after only a short time, the straps dig into the shoulders, the back begins to ache, and the joy of playing diminishes. The right accordion strap makes all the difference – between fatigue-free playing and unnecessary physical strain. In this guide, we explain what you should look for when making a purchase.
What are accordion straps with back straps?
Accordion straps with back straps are shoulder straps that are additionally connected by a strap across the back. This back strap distributes the weight of the instrument more evenly across the shoulders and back, providing noticeable relief.
Who are straps with back straps particularly suitable for?
- Older musicians
- Women with narrow shoulders
- People with back or shoulder issues
- Anyone who plays their accordion primarily while standing
- Musicians with heavier instruments of 96 basses or more
The back strap is not an optional accessory – for many players, it is the deciding factor for pain-free music-making in the long term.
Accordion straps with or without padding?
Padding thickness has a direct impact on comfort – and should be suited to the size of your accordion.
Thin or no padding (under 0.5 cm) | Lightweight accordions with 40–80 basses | Narrow, lightweight, unobtrusive
Medium padding (0.5–1 cm) | Accordions with 80–96 basses | Good compromise between comfort and stability
Thick padding (1 cm and more) | Heavy accordions with 96–120 basses | Maximum shoulder and back protection
Our recommendation: Anyone playing a heavy concert accordion with 120 basses should not skimp on padding. A thin strap under a 9 kg instrument quickly becomes a burden.
How adjustable are accordion straps?
Most high-quality accordion straps can be adjusted infinitely from approx. 83 to 110 cm, allowing them to adapt to different body heights and playing positions. When purchasing, ensure the buckles are made of metal – they last significantly longer than plastic closures.
Genuine leather or synthetic leather – which is better?
This question is particularly important if you own a heavy accordion.
Genuine leather straps
Genuine leather is significantly more tear-resistant and durable than synthetic material. The risk of a strap tearing under load and the instrument falling to the ground is considerably lower with genuine leather. For accordions with 96 to 120 basses, we explicitly recommend genuine leather straps.
PU synthetic leather straps
High-quality PU straps are a good and more affordable alternative for lighter accordions with 48 to 80 basses. They are generally also padded, easy to care for, and water-repellent – ideal for regular use in lessons or at performances.
Genuine leather | 96–120 basses | Very high | High | Recommended for professionals & heavy instruments
PU synthetic leather | 48–80 basses | Good | Medium | Recommended for beginners & lighter instruments
Frequently asked questions about accordion straps
Which accordion straps are suitable for older individuals?
Genuine leather straps with a back strap and thick padding offer the best weight distribution and provide the most relief for the shoulders and back. They are the top choice for older musicians.
At what weight do I need a back strap?
From an instrument weight of about 7–8 kg – i.e., for accordions with 96 basses or more – we recommend a back strap. It prevents the straps from slipping and distributes the weight much better than a simple pair of shoulder straps.
Are accordion straps universally fitting?
Most straps can be adapted to different accordion sizes. Look for compatible attachment hooks and adjustable lengths.
